Tom King is one of the most celebrated and unconventional voices in modern comics — a writer whose path to the page ran through the CIA. Born in 1978 and raised in Los Angeles, King spent seven years as a counterterrorism officer working in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan after 9/11, before leaving the agency to pursue his lifelong dream of writing comics.

That background in high-stakes intelligence work bleeds into everything he writes. King's stories are intimate, psychologically layered, and quietly devastating — character studies wrapped in superhero costumes. His breakthrough came with The Vision at Marvel (2015), a haunting portrait of the android Avenger trying to live a suburban life, which won the Eisner Award for Best Limited Series. He followed that with a landmark run on Batman at DC, and then Mister Miracle (2017) with artist Mitch Gerads — widely considered one of the greatest superhero comics ever made, sweeping the Eisners and cementing his reputation as a generational talent.

Since then, King has produced acclaimed work across DC's lineup, including Strange Adventures, Human Target, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Penguin, Wonder Woman, and Sheriff of Babylon — a grounded war thriller drawn from his own experiences in Baghdad.

Hollywood has taken notice in a big way. His Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is being adapted as a film within James Gunn's new DC Universe. He's the writer and executive producer of Lanterns, the upcoming HBO series following Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigating a murder in the American heartland, co-developed with Damon Lindelof. An adult animated series based on Mister Miracle — with King as showrunner — has been greenlit. His creator-owned romance comic Love Everlasting is in development at Sony Pictures. And he's been tapped to write the screenplay for a Archie Comics feature film for Universal, produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Few writers in comics history have had their work translate to Hollywood at this scale — and fewer still bring the real-world weight to the page that Tom King does.
